You’re Fired! President-elect Trump sent a message, loud and clear. Thus, he won’t extent Obama’s staff past Jan 20, 2017, so pack up boys and girls.
President-elect Donald J. Trump’s transition staff has issued a blanket edict requiring politically appointed ambassadors to leave their overseas posts by Inauguration Day, according to several American diplomats familiar with the plan, breaking with decades of precedent by declining to provide even the briefest of grace periods.
The mandate — issued “without exceptions,” according to a terse State Department cable sent on Dec. 23, diplomats who saw it said — threatens to leave the United States without Senate-confirmed envoys for months in critical nations like Germany, Canada and Britain. In the past, administrations of both parties have often granted extensions on a case-by-case basis to allow a handful of ambassadors, particularly those with school-age children, to remain in place for weeks or months.
Sure. It’s “for the kids.” So Trump gets painted as the bad guy.
These politicos know the game. And when your time ends, you’re out. However, suddenly Trump’s enforcement of the actual rules presents a media-worthy problem?
The article continues to explain how Trump has “taken a hard line.”
Mr. Trump, by contrast, has taken a hard line against leaving any of President Obama’s political appointees in place as he prepares to take office on Jan. 20 with a mission of dismantling many of his predecessor’s signature foreign and domestic policy achievements. “Political” ambassadors, many of them major donors who are nominated by virtue of close ties with the president, almost always leave at the end of his term; ambassadors who are career diplomats often remain in their posts.
In the case of these “career diplomats,” we should just ask ourselves of their accomplishments. Let’s begin with Chris Stevens.
Oh, that’s right…he’s DEAD!
What other world hot spot might we leverage the “intel” of our career diplomats? Have you watched 13 Hours?
But let’s take a look at who Obama kept from the Bush administration.
According to CBS,
Despite vast differences with President George W. Bush on ideology, style and temperament, President Barack Obama has stuck with Bush policies or aspirations on a number of fronts, from counterterrorism to immigration, from war strategy to the global fight against AIDS.
Though Obama kept PEPFAR, the name of the program that fought HIV/AIDS in Africa, the program diminished, when Obama fired the key Bush appointees.
The only key staffers Obama kept of Bush were allowed to hang around as whipping boys, and were mostly military. Then, Obama exited various military “hot spots,” unceremoniously and rather cowardly by most standards. Nice legacy for the generals whom Trump has dusted off, and reactivated.
Joshua Bolten, a former Bush chief of staff said,
“The responsibilities of office drive presidents toward pragmatism,” Where those policies are effective, he added, “the successor has good reason to adopt them.”
No wonder Trump gave a hard date for Obama’s staff to be gone.
