Forget about politics, start learning PR – The story of the successful presidential campaign of Donald Trump and how he is redefining the world of Public Relations.
There is not more controversial and more original story of political success than the one from the “political clown” as they call him, Mr. Donald Trump. He is breaking all the rules and principles of political success with his PR.
If you analyze his “I don’t care about anything” PR strategy in which are broken so many rules, you can’t even call it a strategy. Compared to conventional PR campaign where the success is dependent of precision, details and development, Trump’s campaign is showing us that instinct, smartness and timing are forgotten values that are wrongly thrown out of the organized PR. This is one of the characteristics that is defining the successful campaign of Donald Trump.
In political sense, Mr. Trump is a businessman. He is one of the most successful entrepreneurs of our time. Rich man who is using his wealth to build more wealth and his base is the business community. A true celebrity and a successful projection of his reality show, he is targeting the US public that is frustrated with politicians that are mediocre and boring. “Bad publicity is a good publicity” is a principle that is known in the communication science, but is considered as old-fashioned. Maybe the communication scholars should revise this, having in mind the success of Donald Trump’s campaign, because he is bringing it back on a big door.
Controversial and sometimes even vulgar, leaving debates, going in conflicts with medias, journalists and sometimes even with minorities and countries, Trump broke even the most pessimistic barriers and secured support in places where everybody thought that his controversy will hit a wall.
The general US public is caught in the anti-establishment. They are tired of political correctness and Trump and Sanders are two ends of the same specter. In PR sense they have “taken off gloves” and distanced themselves from the frame of acceptability.
Donald Trump is sincere and the public can relate to that. He says what he means and he is authentic. Authenticity is the most important characteristic of his campaign, no matter what is the way he comes to get it.
Even if Trump isn’t elected as president he is opening a new chapter in the political PR in the USA.
