Game of Thrones is one of the best TV shows ever. We eagerly wait for the next episodes, discuss it with other people, we argue with our friends on who the best character is, who the smartest character is, who the most attractive character is, but do we learn from it? We prepared an interesting way of boosting your negotiating tips based on some GoT characters!
Negotiation is a skill. As Merriam-Webster defines it, negotiation is a formal discussion between two or more people who are striving to reach an agreement that would please all the parties involved.
Luckily, like any other skill, negotiation skills can be learnt and by practicing, we can improve our negotiating skills to almost being perfect [for nothing is perfect, right?]. With these skills, we can negotiate a better salary, a bonus or even a date with the girl/guy we like, are attracted to or love. It is true that sometimes, and for some people always, working on our skills is boring and many of us procrastinate and postpone the training. That is the reason why we, here at Success Street, will help you with tips for improving your negotiating skills through the show we all LOVE, Game of Thrones. Hereinafter, we put ourselves in the shoes of some GoT characters and voice out to you the negotiating skills that these GoT characters have been successfully using.
To effectively negotiate, you need to have all the information. Like me – Varys, you need to have a wide network of “birds”, “spiders” and the like so you can gather all the information you need. We live in an era when information is moving the world forward. Unlike me – Varys (real life is not an episode of GOT) you don’t need to withhold information when you are negotiating but you should use those information so you can get what you want.
Don’t give anything away without getting something in return. When you are negotiating, you should always get something in return if you are giving something away because this way you are giving the other party a strong signal that you are willing to give something up to get what you need. Like me – Lord Petyr Baelish, you should always tie a string “if you do this, I will certainly do that”.
Focus on your strengths, not on your weaknesses. Always know what your strong points are and maximize them, in fact, put them first before everything. Cover your weaknesses and don’t let the other party exploit them. I – Tyrion, am physically the weakest and we all remember the scene where I was supposed to fight yet I found a way to give someone else that assignment, what in the final instance save my head, I survived!
In short, these three characters taught us that when we find ourselves on the negotiating table, we shall always have all the information we need, focus on our strengths and if we give something away, we shall always demand something in return. These three “strategies” are being used separately by three different GoT characters.
By making a combo, you are three times stronger negotiator than any of these three. Try it and tell us your story, we would love to hear it!
